Services
We aim to move New York City toward the goal of becoming a trauma-informed city by creating awareness about ACEs and how to address their effects among a range of public and private stakeholders. We are working to make our vision a reality by engaging with partners representing: local government, education, social services, health care, law enforcement, the faith community, families and the community at large. Our objective is for all organizations that make up the community to be able to respond to trauma by fully integrating core knowledge about its effects into their operations.
What we do
1. Serve as a resource for the creation of a cross-sector coalition to make New York City a trauma-informed city
- Facilitate partnerships to implement trauma- informed practices and coordinate existing services
- Assist neighborhoods across New York City to apply trauma-informed practices in their communities
2. Increase public awareness in New York City of the factors associated with ACEs and trauma experienced across the lifespan, with a focus on its lasting impact on development
- Conduct an annual speaker series with national and local experts that is open to the public
- Support organizations to increase their understanding of and compassion for the effects of trauma on the development of children and adults by providing information on the latest ACEs research
3. Promote research and demonstration activities on meaningful solutions to mitigate the harmful effects of childhood adversity
- Validate and disseminate scientific findings to inform policy makers and practitioners
- For example: build evidence for supportive parenting practices to build better brains; design stigma-free health care and educational models; create safe, child-friendly spaces; incorporate mindfulness into existing services; build health into housing; and engage communities in the co- production of interventions
4. Design educational, training and service learning programs in trauma-informed practices at Columbia University
- Develop undergraduate and graduate courses on the causes and effects of trauma, and current trauma-informed care practices
- Create service learning experiences for graduate and undergraduate students in partnership with community groups and external stakeholders
- Offer certificate programs and workshops for professionals seeking further knowledge and credentials in trauma-informed approaches
